What to use and which method works best?

Firstly, Let's Talk About The Benefits of Flossing for Your Oral Health

Flossing is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain a healthy smile. While brushing removes plaque from the surfaces of your teeth, flossing targets the areas in between teeth and along the gumline, where harmful bacteria often hide. Regular flossing can help prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath, supporting overall oral health.

There are quite a few products out there so we're taking a look at the most common together with the pros and cons of each. At the end of the day, flossing is important, any of the methods below is better than none at all!

Traditional Floss (Dental Tape)

Traditional floss, often in the form of a thin nylon or Teflon tape, is the classic choice for cleaning between teeth.

  • Pros: Inexpensive, widely available, highly effective at removing plaque when used correctly.
  • Cons: Can be tricky for those with limited dexterity, may cause gum irritation if used too aggressively, requires technique and patience.

Floss Harps / Floss Picks

Floss picks (also called floss harps) are small handheld tools that hold a piece of floss taut, making it easier to reach the back teeth.

  • Pros: Easier for children and adults with dexterity challenges, convenient for travel, reduces the likelihood of cutting your gums.
  • Cons: Less environmentally friendly due to single-use plastic, may not reach as deeply between teeth as traditional floss, limited floss length per pick.

Water Flossers

Water flossers use a pressurized stream of water to remove plaque and debris between teeth and along the gumline.

  • Pros: Very gentle on gums, excellent for braces, bridges, or implants, easy for people with limited manual dexterity.
  • Cons: More expensive, requires countertop space and access to electricity, doesn’t always replace mechanical flossing completely for stubborn plaque.

Finding the Right Fit

Ultimately, the best flossing method is the one you will actually use consistently. For most people, combining brushing with either traditional floss, a floss pick, or a water flosser can dramatically improve oral health. If you’re unsure which method is right for you, your dental team at City Dental Practice can help guide you to the option that fits your teeth, gums, and lifestyle.
